Old English, though confusing to interpret, was recently introduced in my Ap English class. Reviewing the English Declaration and American Independence exposed us to the formal, elegant style that such documents deserve. Many words were tough to understand but as a group we were able to make sense of them. By paraphrasing line by line each document and searching the definitions of unknown words our class was able to fully admire the composition and style of Old English as well as understand the statements being imposed. Old english demonstrates how languages change over time by adopting and adding new words into our language as the english that was spoken 500 years ago differ in diction, syntax, and pronunciation.
